Sri Lanka Day 1 - The Elephant Orphanage - Pinnawala

As we arrived, our appointed guide was waiting to greet us at the Colombo airport. It was a sunny hot day and it was only 9am.

Our bus and tour guide greeted us and we hopped on it. I felt like I was in India but I felt the air was much cooler and the surroundings were much cleaner.

If in India the air will be very dry and dusty furthermore the cleanliness is not managed as the population is huge.

Our journey started and we were heading to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. On the way we had to stop for lunch. First try of the Sri Lankan curry and rice was a great deal though. I didn't like fish as it has some kind of dry fish smell. I remained trying the vegetarian curry and rice more.
Elephants in the river for their bath

We arrived Pinnawala at last, it was already elephant bathing time, the guide rushed us to get the glimpse of the elephants taking their bath in river before they head home. The sun was not at all favouring us.

I walked down a street lined with souvenir shops selling everything from leather bags to elephant sculptures, and soon found myself standing amazingly close to a herd of Sri Lankan elephants bathing in the river. It was pretty spectacular.

The elephants spent time wading through the river till to the opposite bank, and along the muddy shore. While many of the elephants were much larger than I had expected.

The elephants were scattered everywhere along the river having their baths. The best thing to view was there were lots and lots of elephants maybe 50 or 60 hanging out in the river and getting their baths.

Several of the older elephants were very protective and hovered around their little ones as it frolicked in the river.I have always seen a single elephant in a zoo or circus, but this was a great sight of view looking at more than one in one place itself.

By the river, watching the elephants they were lots of tourists and local tours.
I bought some bananas from the same men that will bug to buy a packet of bananas but actually, we are not allowed to feed the elephants so DO NOT WASTE MONEY to buy any of these bananas from them.

After the bathing time, the elephants were herded back along the souvenir-studded street to their homes. They walk past me majestically and every step they placed was so gentle and humble. The elephant wrangler will not allow you to touch or even get close to these elephants. The elephants were like giants passing by me with their huge flapping ears.

We continue to visit the orphanage across the bathing place where they some rescued elephants from landmines and orphaned baby elephants.

Here we were able to get closer to the elephant though they were not so friendly with the strangers. This was more a close encounter with them for yourself and no restrictions. I visited the baby elephants busy eating after their bath. They were adorably cute and cute as I can say. I was so thrilled to touch and be so close to them.

The closer we get to them...these were the babies

It was raining, we had to get back to our vehicle and next was to the hotel .
